Floor Drain Problems and Solutions

Floor drain

Hello friends.

As you can tell, today we want to tell you about floor drains.

Why floor drains?

This is a relatively small portion of your sewer system, but it is a very important one. Floor drain should be present in every house, located near the hot water tank. That is if anything goes wrong with your hot water tank, the hot water will flow straight to the floor drain.

So, what is a floor drain?

floor drain design

Briefly and technically, it is usually a p-trap, or even better, a running trap. In Toronto, the floor drain is used to connect the sanitary line to the storm line, and if it has any problems, it can cause basement floods during rain, as all the rainwater from roofs flows through them. Even with relatively modest amounts of rain water, it will fill up 30-40% of the cross flow pipes. Therefore, the floor drain must always be in good standing, so that the water will run through it without any problems, and without losing speed.
If there are any problems, it is necessary to replace it, because due to its design the drain cannot be completely cleaned.

Note that floor drain is a trap, and unlike a building trap it should not be replaced with a cleanout, as they carry out different functions. Floor drain is set up in the unfortunate event that water somehow ends up on the floor of your basement, it does not stop there, flooding your basement, and gets into the sewer system instead.

Sewage Problems

Remember, if your sewage system is working well, you will not notice it. But when problems arise, you cannot miss them. Therefore, it is best to do a complete camera inspection of your system, say annually or bi-annually, and replace malfunctioning parts, or, if necessary, the entire system.
