A clogged sink is an ugly sight. It also causes hassles for you and your family. In case you have visitors, that clogged sink would leave a bad impression. Even if your home is totally clean and neat, a clogged sink will ruin the image and the moment.
That’s why you need to solve the problem immediately. You don’t want any hassles. You don’t want the water in the sink to overflow. If you allow it, the surrounding areas will be flooded. That causes more problems to you and your family. So what should you do then?
You need to do the clogged sink repair or hire someone to do it for you. We will discuss the ways on how to do the repair on your own. We will also discuss when it’s time to ask for help. This way you’ll avoid potential problems such as flooding and damage to your sink.
There are at least 3 ways on how to unclog a sink. Here they are:
Using a plunger is the most common solution. Almost all homes have a plunger to use for clogged toilets, sinks, and other drain systems. It’s very handy especially because we want to unclog sinks and toilets as fast as we can. Clogged toilets and sinks is almost an emergency. We need to act immediately and that’s where the plunger comes in.
It’s easy to do. First is you position the plunger over the drain. You pump the plunger up and down quickly. Keep in mind that the goal is for the clog or debris to move somehow. This way it can move down freely down the drain. The motion of the plunger causes some movement further down and that will help in dislodging the clog.
It’s fast and easy. But there are some cases where plunging doesn’t work as expected. Maybe the clog is pretty solid or the force of the plunger is not enough to dislodge the debris. That’s why some people try using the chemical approach.
You don’t need to use harsh chemicals. You can use the mild ones readily available at your home. You can use vinegar and baking soda to dissolve the clog somehow. Then the clog will get smaller and might freely move down the drain.
First is you need to put the baking soda into the drain. You might need a spatula to force down the baking soda. Then you pour 1 cup of vinegar into the drain. This way the baking soda and vinegar will have some chemical reactions. Then wait for at least 5 minutes. You can then pour warm water into the drain. The whole process could result to the dissolving of the clog. Then it will be free to move further down thereby draining all the water in the sink.
You might need to do this a few times before you see any result. However, there are a few cases where the use of chemicals and plunging won’t work. Maybe the clog is rock solid. Maybe the clog is the result of many years of waste and debris accumulation. Or maybe the clog is tightly stuck in the drain.
Fortunately, there’s another way to fix your clogged sink. It’s through the use of a drain snake. It deals right straight through the problem. First is you detach the curved pipe below the sink (put a bucket below so you catch the water). Then you use a drain snake or a cable auger into the horizontal pipe on the wall. The goal here is to dislodge the clog by moving the tip of the drain snake and initiating contact with the debris.
It seems it’s easy to do. But the truth is it can be much more messy and complicated. You have to choose the right tool and you also need to know how to use it. If you’re using it in the wrong way, it might cause more problems such as damage to your pipes. It might also cause some hand injuries if you’re not careful with it.
That’s why it’s best to hire professionals if plunging and chemical usage don’t work. This way they can deal straight through the problem. They can effectively do the clogged sink repair without any hassles on your part. They can choose the right tools for each job.
